Voice coaches go crazy over artist who changes the game

TENSIONS between The Voice coaches Boy George and Kelly Rowland hit boiling point on the show last night and Confidential can reveal they didn’t simmer down straight after filming ended.

When pitching to win the approval of artist Ricky Nifo, a father of four from Mt Druitt, the Culture Club singer took offence that Rowland referred to him as “the guy in the hat”.

Then when Nifo ended up signing on to team Kelly, George told the other coaches Rowland could “f ... off” adding he was “an icon in a hat”.

Fellow coach Joe Jonas added the tensions did not die down when the next artist walked on stage.

“I’m thankful that I’m on the opposite side when George and Kelly start bickering,” he said.

“There are definitely moments that are heated, to say the least ... there is tension. Sometimes we need a break and go take five, because everyone is fuming.”

Jonas added that one of the advantages he has in the competition is “being younger and being in a band still gives me a bit of an advantage”.

And it’s this relevance that Boy George is sensitive about. Despite selling more than 50 million albums as part of Culture Club, some artists have chosen to work with other coaches because of their relevance on today’s charts.

“Boy George is out to prove that his iconic status and experience shouldn’t be overlooked,” the source said.

Tonight the show, which has picked up in the ratings, will welcome the youngest artist ever to the competition.

Lidcombe schoolboy Leo Abisaab has benefited from producers lowering the age eligibility, and was just days off his 15th birthday when he auditioned.

Abisaab said while he’s a quiet person and has often been bullied because he looks “different”, when he sings he’s completely different.

“I was definitely nervous going on stage in front of them. They are people I’ve looked up to my entire life,” he said. “But I’ve been a fan of the show since I was nine. It’s something I’ve been working towards and I had to give it a go.”
