A drama-filled season of The Voice

REALITY television singing competitions have “haunted” Luke Antony for almost a decade, with the singer constantly trying out for them without success.

“I think I auditioned for Idol when I was 16 and since then have never had any luck with the TV shows,” Antony told The Sunday Telegraph’s Confidential.

“I tried out for The X Factor and Dannii Minogue said to me, ‘I don’t know what you’re about’.”

However, after coming out as gay four years ago, the 27-year-old decided to give the reality television singing world one more shot by trying out for the current season of The Voice.

“My coming out journey has been a huge factor in my music,” the Townsville-born, Sydney based Antony said.

“I grew up in small town, in a Christian family, where being gay wasn’t an option. I was working my arse off to create different versions of myself for different audiences and people saw straight through that.

“They knew I wasn’t being authentically me.”

Now, Antony — who appears on the Channel 9 singing show tonight — is putting his powerhouse soul vocals to the test against coaches Boy George, Kelly Rowland, Joe Jonas and Delta Goodrem.

He even turned down a potential management and album deal to appear as a contestant on the show.

“I’m a professional singer so you have to think, if I don’t turn a chair it will look shocking,” he said.

“But despite all of that something in my gut told me I just had to still give it a shot.

“I feel like I’ve got a lot more to lose than some of the other artists who don’t call themselves professional singers by trade.

“Sometimes you just have toput yourself out there though so here I am.”
