Thousands of characters came to life at the Melbourne Oz Comic Con 2025 on the weekend.
Taking place at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre in South Wharf, this year’s event was a truly memorable experience.
From 9am Saturday and Sunday, the venue filled with thousands of cosplayers in their striking and creative costumes.
Whether you’re a diehard sci-fi lover, animation addict or cosplay enthusiast, Oz Comic Con Melbourne promised something for everyone.
Cosplay remains a highlight of the Oz Comic Con experience, and Melbourne again hosted the renowned Oz Comic Con Championships of Cosplay — one of Australia’s most esteemed cosplay competitions.
Participants also vied for a generous $1500 cash prize and had the coveted opportunity to be immortalised in Oz Comic Con’s Hall of Fame.
Enthusiasts of all skill levels were invited to celebrate the art of cosplay through dedicated spaces for photo shoots, stage showcases, and community-building activities that showcase creativity, craftsmanship and camaraderie.
Melbourne man Dan Heubel said comic con allowed him to bring out his nerdy and geeky side.
“I’ve always loved being a kid so it’s always great to come around here and dress up as people — your favourite character — just love coming to these places and meet interesting people,” the 32-year-old said.
Mr Heubel dressed up as Karate Kid’s “Daniel Son”, which he said suited him perfectly as he was an actual black belt in the sport.
“In a weird sort of way, I felt that I couldn’t be Daniel Son without actually being a black belt in karate, so it made it all authentic,” he said.
Daniel Glavas of West Melbourne said comic con was a pop culture event where you could “go all out”.
“And basically just cosplay whatever you like doing and go comfortable with what you’re doing,” the 36-year-old said.
“The reason why I do it is because we can actually make friends and our crew has actually gotten bigger over the years.
“I started out as a ghostbuster originally — we’ve got our own crew called the Melbourne ghostbusters and then over the years, our group has just expanded.
“When it happens, we all just contact one another and we all meet up before the event, have something to eat, drink and just walk all together.”
Cosplayer Reed Collins was crowned the lip syncing champion at comic con.
Ms Collins said getting to go up, perform and win was amazing as she got to perform a number she really enjoyed and had fun with.
“I’m just really proud of how I did,” she said.
Ms Collins added it was great to hang out with her friends, including her best friend and cosplayer Arcade at the event.
“I love getting to go to cons and match with my friends and do silly little shenanigans,” she said.

Audible also invited fans to test their knowledge of beloved Sci-Fi and Fantasy titles, including Harry Potter and The Hunger Games, in an immersive, escape room-style experience.
Through a series of audio and interactive challenges, participants were asked to engage with themed props and clues to unlock the secrets of the Audible Secret Library.
The convention centre is also known for hosting other exciting events such as The Animaga Expo and the PAX Aus Convention.
The Herald Sun was there to snap pictures of all the attendees dressed as their favourite characters, who all striked a pose for the camera!
