Palm Beach Currumbin SHS tonight won a bash-up derby against Gold Coast arch rivals Keebra Park SHS 18-6 at Pizzey Park.

PBC SHS captain Zane Harrison was a here, there and everywhere man who, along with his hooker Will Saunders and flying five-eight Bailey McConnell, proved the difference around the ruck.

The match finished in dramatic circumstances with two drag’em out, throw them down scuffles in the final minute between the teams lead to the sin-binning of three Keebra Park players and two from PBC SHS.

Both team’s aimed up in defence, but PBC SHS were good enough to take their limited chances and then defend their lead in the second half.

PBC SHS thoroughly deserved its win, turning a 12-nil halftime lead into a 18-nil advantage before a last minute try to classy Keebra Park SHS fullback Mason Barber.

PBC SHS’s only second half try came from eyes-up football by No.6 McConnell who offered a perfectly placed grubber kick that centre Sam Stephenson swept forward to snare.

PBC SHS had been put into a scoring position after being waved two successive penalties, and they made the most of possession.

Keebra tried hard, but with Harrison orchestrating his side and forwards Brady Turner, Jett Jackson and Baylen Donald weighing in with hefty contributions, PBC SHS were worthy winners.

It was a rugged, pitched battle for territory across the opening 30 minutes, with every metre gained a victory for either side.

PBC SHS opened the scoring in the sixth minute when hooker Will Saunders gapped them from 40m out, blazing forward and catching his five-eight Bailey McConnell on the fly.

MConnell then sprinted the final 15m to the line.

Then came 25 minutes of a back and forth slog, broken only by the dancing feet of PBC little me McConnell, Zane Harrison and Will Saunders off the back of some quick play the balls.

Walters Cup Wrap: Keebra Park hold on for brusing win

A fast starting Keebra Park SHS ended up defending their way to a brusing 14-nil win over Palm Beach Currumbin.

Keebra Park SHS were under starters orders, and they stormed out of the barriers to dominate the first half, leading 12-nil at halftime.

They were even better than the 12-nil score line indicated, with rushing defence and uptempo play around the ruck catching PBC on the back foot.

But it was Keebra Park’s second half defensive shut out which won the game for the side.

It was a gallant 13 man effort across the line which refused to yield despite periods of extended pressure from PBC SHS.

Keebra Park had a cushion courtesy of an outstanding first half.

Keebra almost scored in the opening minutes after a run around movement between half Jai Bilish and hooker Cooper Murphy created a hole, but Keebra could not finish the chance.

But there was no mistake the next time, with hooker Cooper Murphy diving over from dummy half.

He also kicked both his conversions, the second of which came after his halfback Bilish had put his edge forward Tomasi’ Vaitai into a gap to score.

Keebra Park were in an attacking position for that try after Bilish pumped a 40-20 down the field.

Then into the second half talented Keebra fullback David Bryenton started coming into the game before Keebra Park pulled down the shutters and withstood a PBC storm.

Prop Tavaka Tau’a’alo was also powerful for Keebra Park, while PBC edge forward Nelson Makaafi tried hard.

The two great rivals will collide on what is the inaugural Keebra Park Old Boys Day celebration.

Both the Walters Cup Year 10 match (6pm) and the Langer Trophy game (7pm) will be live streamed on KommunityTV.

Keebra Park SHS coach Peter Norman, a past student of Keebra said “when you have two of the most successful schools in the history of schoolboy rugby league located on the Gold Coast it is always going to develop into some sort of rivalry’’.

Keebra Park SHS HOD Senior School - Pathways, Darren Hart, said the rivalry was unmatched.

“There is no other rivalry in any form of schoolboy sport as big as this,’’ Hart said.

PBC coach Tim Maccan is a past player of PBC SHS who played in previous derby matches between the two schools.

“These games genuinely bring out the best in players and it’s the game on the calendar that every player, student and teacher past or present do not want to miss. Even the locals want to know when the game is on each year.’’

Maccan said the rivalry had existed for as long as he can remember.

“I started as a student at PBC in 1996 and it was as strong then as it is now,’’ Maccan said.

“I believe PBC struggled to beat Keebra in the early days during the 80’s, however PBC gained some success late 80’s - early 90’s lead by then captain and our first NRL Red Craig Weston, along with PBC’s most successful coach Rod Patison.

“The rivalry then built up over time due to the closeness of each match and the fact that four out of seven of the current PBC coaching staff are ex-PBC students.

Maccan and Norman said the rivalry would stand the test of time.

“Without a doubt,’’ Maccan said.

Norman added: “Like I mentioned earlier – it is a healthy rivalry and there is a high level of respect for both programs.

“These kind of matches help prepare the students for playing in high pressure games not only later in the year but also well into their professional careers.’’

Maccan agreed there was great respect between the two communities.

“You have to respect what they have done in the past and how they currently operate as a program,’’ Maccan said.

“They have had great success and produced some quality teams and players over the years.’’

NORMAN-MACCAN AND THEIR MAGIC MOMENT

PBC SHS current coach and former player Tim Maccan said there had been many magic moments between the schools over the years, “too many to list’’, he said.

“But the one that sticks out to me is the 2011 State Final at Burleigh where PBC won by a field in golden point.

“I was running water for our team that year which consisted of past and present NRL stars Jamal Fogarty (five-eighth), Jahrome Hughes (fullback), Lloyd Perrett (front row) and the match winner himself Kane Elgey (halfback).”

Keebra Park’s Jordan Kahu was part of the side that won the 2009 SEQ final of the Arrive Alive Cup.

Keebra Park SHS coach Peter Norman said the 2009 SEQ semi-final of the GIO Cup (now known as the NRL Schoolboy Cup) at Pizzey Park stands out.

“I had graduated school in 2008 but went down to watch a few of my mates who were playing for both sides. PBC had two Australian Schoolboys (Jordan Rankin and Ryan James) but Keebra ended up winning 13-6 that game before going on and winning the national title with boys like Jordan Kahu, Ben Murdoch-Masila, Isaac Liu and Mosese Fotuaika in the team.

“The main thing I remember from that night was the atmosphere from the crowd that night. Hopefully we can get something similar from the supporters on Tuesday night.’’
