It may not have been the silkiest Langer Trophy performance from Mabel Park, but it proved more than enough to dispose of an undermanned Caloundra 28-12 on Wednesday.

The ground fell silent for the second week in a row to honour former Caloundra SHS student and rugby league talent, Ben ‘BJ’ Hunter, following his tragic death over the school holidays.

Once the match was underway, it took just two minutes for the visitors to stamp their authority on the match, with halfback Jackson Howe scoring out on the right-hand side.

Both sides had their fair share of possession but some good quick hands and hard running saw Mabel Park fullback Ryan McCann slice through a gap to extend the lead.

Langer Trophy: Emotional scenes as teams perform tribute Haka post-match

Caloundra returned serve soon after, creating space and opportunities before lock forward Chase Patterson got his legs going to score near the left upright.

That try only seemed to awaken the beast even further as Mabel Park hit back with two quick four pointers thanks to Cooper Day and Ocean Tavita.

The second half got underway with the scores 22-6, and after Caloundra was unable to capitalise on some beneficial field position, Mabel Park second rower Chaev Kolone burst through the gap and wrestled the ball down for his first four points of the match.

A good effort play from Caloundra’s Brodie Halpin resulted in a Mabel Park turnover and winger Tristan Roselt scored.

Neither side were unable to cross the chalk again after that, with both sides going toe-to-toe for the final 10 minutes.

There were some heartwarming scenes post-match that were appreciated by many, with both sides joining arms and exchanging jerseys before Mabel Park and Caloundra players performed a haka in honour of Ben Hunter.

Mabel Park enjoy big Walters Cup success

Glimpses of individual brilliance and a second-half fightback weren’t enough for Caloundra to come away with a Walters Cup success on Wednesday.

A dominant opening 10 minutes from Mabel Park put the writing on the wall and they went on to record a decisive 40-16 victory.

The visitors opened the scoring early in their first attacking set through the hands of Dean Tauaa before adding another try just minutes later, with Riley Baker running a good line and bringing the ball around to score under the sticks.

With the Caloundra defence slipping off too many tackles, the boys in sky blue marched down the field again for Francis Pepe to dive over on the short side.

Tauaa cruised down the sideline to score his second of the afternoon before Caloundra were finally able to get the footy in their hands, which saw five-eight Ellyjah Brive produce a lovely dink over the top for Zayne Hudson to scoop up and score in the corner.

A two-man breakaway on the halfway line meant that Kahmarley Faa’oga Andrew ended up with the ball in his hands before beating his man and cruising 35m to score.

Some good ball movement from Mabel Park just after halftime ended up in the hands of Amos Gaulai, who put his foot down to score under the posts.

Caloundra got within scoring range again, which saw an unplanned and somewhat unnatural kick from Keegan Zanchetta placed perfectly on the try line for Jonathan Leuluai to score the Seahawks’ second try of the match.

Some second-half Mabel Park errors were an invitation to Caloundra, who put together some strong forward runs before Brive scored under the posts.

Mabel Park second rower Majah-Jose Peachey found himself the recipient of some good team ball movement and width, scoring his first of the afternoon. Another well-worked team try just minutes later put the seal on the result.

PREVIEW

Caloundra SHS host Mabel Park SHS in a cracking Langer Trophy round five clash on Wednesday.

Caloundra would be searching for their first win of the season while the fourth-placed Mabel Park are looking to bounce back following a 38-16 loss to Ipswich.

In arguably the game of the year so far, scores were tied at 16 all at halftime before Ipswich piled on four tries in the final 22 minutes.

Mabel Park head coach Ben Weston said he and his side were disappointed in how they finished the match.

“We were devastated,” he said.

“We made it way too hard for ourselves with too many penalties and too much drop ball.”

Caloundra were again in the arm wrestle for the first half last week but fell away in the second 30 and couldn't stop the powerful Keebra Park roll on.

They will get the benefit of playing just their second home game of the season in round five but would be without their captain and halfback, Tully McLellan, for the second week in a row.

With the 2023 season shaping up to be the competition’s closest finish in years, Weston said his side would need to ‘be at their best’ if they were to solidify their top four spot on the ladder.

“The boys are keen to turn it around,” he said.

“They know they were poor last week and we want to go up there on Wednesday and re-establish ourselves.

“It’s a tough trip up there and we know Caloundra won’t make it easy so we’ve got to hold onto the ball and give ourselves every chance.

Weston said he hoped to see Mabel’s outside backs step up and take the pressure off his side’s middle forwards.

Matches begin from 3pm between Mabel Park SHS and Caloundra SHS in the Walters Cup, before the Langer Trophy kicks off at 4pm.
