Marsden State High needed a late converted try and penalty goal to beat brave Redcliffe, who had threatened to grab a major Walters Cup scalp.
With the Langer Trophy match between the two schools decided on Sunday as a prelude to the NRL clash at Kayo Stadium, the Walters Cup took centre stage - and the young guns didn’t disappoint.
Marsden started fast but Redcliffe hit back within two minutes to lock the scores up at 6-6.
Marsden gradually dominated and looked to have the game in their grasp when they crossed for their third try early in the second half for a 14-6 lead.
But Redcliffe weren’t done and two converted tries had them 18-14 up with less than five minutes remaining.
They couldn’t hang on though as Marsden finished the stronger to take a 22-18 win.
Super Black takes part Redcliffe
Marsden State High halfback Coby Black showed the full power of his playmaking arsenal at Kayo Stadium, as the Langer Trophy ladder leaders dominated Redcliffe State High.
Black was involved in everything in a dynamic first-half performance, before putting the finishing touches on a 69-22 win with a final-minute field goal.

The Langer Trophy clash was played as a curtain-raiser to the Dolphins-Panthers NRL clash, and the Broncos-contracted youngster was not going to waste the opportunity on a big stage.
The two schools will clash in a standalone Walters Cup clash at Dolphin Oval on Wednesday.
Black, who played halfback for the Queensland Schoolboys team at the ASSSRL 18 years nationals this month, scored or assisted on five of Marsden’s six first half tries.

In the second half he was just as good.
There was one Australian Schoolboy in action and that was Redcliffe Dolphins signed John Fineanganofo, who himself scored a stellar try.
But it was Black and his band of talented Marsden teammates who were slick as ever and at their absolute peak when offloading prop Simone Suilua, silky five eighth Javon Andrews and tall second-row finisher Cairo Ruri combined to open the scoring in the second half.
Black then assisted the next three tries off his trusty right boot, the best a slick grubber behind the defensive line which nestled in the hands of Andrews.
Marsden were dominant, but a gutsy Redcliffe found it within them to hit back after falling 22-nil down after 15 minutes. They had spirit.
Fineanganofo and Hamish Roshan scored to tighten things up at 22-12 before Marsden flipped a switch and shot ahead again up 52-12 only minutes into the second half.
Marsden struck away and continued to dazzle on the edges through Lui Lee, Will Semu and speed demon Saxon Innes. Those three were impressive.
Jacob Tinsley and Corey Pearse provided punch out of dummy-half and Lewis Symonds led the forward pack out of the lock position.
At times, Marsden looked almost unstoppable with ball in hand.
Without it, Redcliffe looked promising but they spent considerably more time defending.
High praise to second rower Lincoln Kemp and Henry Sologokin who defended their hearts out.
Worth a mention was also Hayden Potts who directed his Redcliffe team from hooker and Aholoko Toia who was strong in the forwards.
There were good patches of footy shown by Redcliffe, enough to excite Redcliffe Dolphins NRL supporters who have a hotbed of talent right under their nose.
Preview: Redcliffe coach heaps praise on powerhouse forward
Redcliffe SHS coach Jay Wilkinson has heaped praise on his middle forward work horse Loko Toia as Redcliffe prepare for its round 5 Langer Trophy match against Marsden SHS at Kayo Stadium on Sunday at 1.45pm.
The clash, a curtain-raiser to the NRL match between the Dolphins and Penrith, will also be a special occasion for Marsden SHS edge forward who has been promoted to the squad after playing a blinder in Walters Cup last Wednesday.
But it could be a special return to Kayo Stadium for Toia, who last played at Redcliffe’s premier venue in maroon at the ASSRL Under-18 Nationals.
Redcliffe coach Wilkinson said Toia, signed by the Sydney Roosters, was arguably Queensland’s best forward at that tournament.
“I thought he really pushed his case for Aussie selection,’’ Wilkinson said.
One player who did earn selection in that Australian Schoolboys side was Redcliffe SHS livewire John Fineanganofo.
The Redcliffe side scored 16 points in its loss to Gold Coast powerhouse Palm Beach Currumbin (32-16) on Wednesday, and if any side drops their guard, the Fineanganofo and his troops have the potential to make them pay.
Aside from his current Marsden SHS squad, Mako’s coach Hartigan will be surrounded by a host of past students who will be watching the Langer Trophy curtain-raiser as Penrith players.
The game will be an occasion for Marsden SHS coach Matt Hartigan.
Past Patrician Brothers Blacktown students coached by Hartigan include elite Penrith five-eighth Jarome Luai, centre sensation Izack Tago, powerhouse prop Spencer Leniu, NSW centre Stephen Crichton and Soni Luke.
Hartigan is now the Marsden SHS head coach where he guides the career path of that school’s best batch of league players.
Marsden forced their way to the top of the Langer Trophy ladder on Wednesday, and remain the only undefeated team in the elite schoolboys competition.
They will be determined to maintain that record in the massive game on Sunday, but will need to be on their guard.
