Replay: Wavell vs Mabel Park (Langer Trophy)

A Karl Oloapu first half masterclass derailed Mabel Park SHS ambush bid and propelled Wavell SHS to its second win of the season, 32-16, in Langer Trophy action.

Oloapu, the Wavell SHS five-eighth, laid one try on, scored one himself, produced driving up and under tackles and sparked attack with long and short balls during a complete first half performance.

By halftime he had helped his team to a 16-nil lead and although Mabel Park were in the battle during the cut and thrust of the game, Oloapu’s input was a cut above the pack.

He then generated Wavell’s last try of the match - and the third by winger Tyreece Tait - to complete the scoring.

It was not all about Oloapu, however, with Mark Tuialii’s brilliant grubber kick try raising Wavell to 10-nil, and a long distance try to winger Tyreece Tait coming after his centre Amos Tuialli had reeled in an attacking kick by Mabel Park SHS, generating defence into attack.

Around Oloapu, his hooker Jai Camilleri delivered excellent service in the dew, and middle men Ben Uini, Damascus Neemia and Loto Salei drove forward.

Despite the scoreline Mabel Park SHS were not light years from their opponents.

But a rushed play here and there, along with organised Wavell defence, prevented Mabel from adding scoreboard pressure.

Mabel Park threatened when hooker Daytona Tupuhi-Taoho trailed prop Alex Leapai through the ruck, and their shifts were full of promise without ever punching a hole in the Wavell defence.

Leapai thoroughly deserved his team’s try, a rampaging midfield burst which reduced Wavell’s lead to 22-6, 17 minutes from fulltime.

Earlier in the match, Oloapu did it all himself with a fine individual try after he had also cast a magic ball across the line for his winger Tyreece Tait to latch onto and run 30m to score.

Red alert alarm bells again sounded Oloapu in the Mabel line when Oloapu shaped to pass inside but went outside, but this time Mabel Park’s sliding defence snared Wavell fullback Po Hotere-Papalii just short of the line.

Winger Tait had a good night, twice striding out for long distance tries, and on another occasion bundling his opponent over the sideline to give ball back to Wavell.

On the other edge centre Mark Tuialii scored twice.

Big prop Chaev Kolone scored twice as Mabel Park SHS got the job done 20-8 in Walters Cup action.

Canterbury signed Mabel Park SHS left edge player Duquan Talaepa crashed over early, then Mabel Park added another when prop Kolone also found the tryline from short range.

Kolone then scored another in the second half as Mabel established a match winning advantage.

Mabel Park’s two earlier tries were punctuated by long striding Wavell SHS centre Robertson Tusi Tofu scoring after Charlie Dickson had cleverly unloaded in a tackle.

Wavell then lost Dickson to injury, and although Romeo Loapou scored late for Wavell, the better side won and won well.

Langer Reserves

In the Langer reserves, Wavell SHS had a good victory over Mabel 16-12 in a tough, tight tussle.

Wavell edge forward Vili Vaomotou crashed over six minutes from fulltime to poke his side in front.

both teams traded tries early with Wavell fullback Oli Jones opening the scoring, then Mabel Park’s power forward Andreas Mariner burrowing over.

Wavell looked set to take a lead into halftime after Josh Daniel-Harris crossed, but the Mabel Park SHS left winger plucked a pass out of the air to run 60m and score an intercept try.

THE PREVIEW

The off-season training with the Sydney Roosters has Mabel Park SHS prop Alex Leapai primed to lead his school team through the Langer Trophy this season.

Leapai, the son of retired champion heavy weight boxer Alex “Lionheart’’ Leapai, will feature in one of the Langer trophy matches of the round today against Wavell SHS.

All four games - along with four Walters Cup (Year 10) clashes - will be livestreamed by www.couriermail.com.au, the Gold Coast Bulletin and affiliates this afternoon.

The matches will continue News Corp’s bumper coverage of the elite schoolboy rugby league competition.

Leapai is such a talent, the Roosters would fly him to Sydney each weekend to play in the Harold Matthews under 17 competition.

It is a rare honour to be treated with such importance by a NSW-based NRL club, with SHS prop Rene Bagon (Manly Sea Eagles) the only other Langer Trophy player treated in such a manner.

Leapai spent the entire off-season at the Roosters, living at Kingsford share house with other young recruits.

“It was amazing. The atmosphere was great and staying down there gave me a taste of what the dream has installed for me,’’ he said.

“I watched some of the NRL training sessions to watch the stuff that they do which gave me an idea of what my job is as an athlete and where I need to develop my game.

“They were really welcoming. Even if I was standing 20m away they’d give a wave to me.

“It was an amazing experience. You don’t see many boys go down there each week.

“It is amazing playing for the Sydney Roosters.’’
