REPLAY: Wavell vs Marsden in Langer Trophy
THE GAMES
A scrambling try to Marsden SHS’s Jacob Tinsley eight minutes fulltime proved the difference in a Langer Trophy thriller tonight at Wavell SHS.
Marsden SHS won 20-16, surviving a dramatic scare late when Wavell centre Mark Tuialii was cut centimetres short of scoring right on fulltime.
Wavell SHS had led for most of the match until an ugly, stacks-on-the-mill try under the posts by Tinsley lifted Marsden marginally above their rivals.
All this after Wavell SHS five-eight Karl Oloupa twice delivered supreme touches in his team’s chase of victory.
Oloupa put his edge forward D’Metrius Iose over the score, stretching Wavell’s lead to 16-6 before a surging Devonte Vaivela powered his way over for Marsden SHS, setting the stage for a cracking finale.
It was a huge effort by Vaivela who surged from the centres, back toward the posts before launching himself in to score.
The match was there for Wavell to win, but a desperate Marsden generated momentum in the final quarter of the game.
Earlier in the match, Down 10-nil, Coby Black scored Marsden’s first points of the season three minutes from halftime with a quick tap and run play that caught the Wavell defence napping.
His conversion from wide out then reduced the margin to 6-10.
Marsden then challenged Wavell again straight from the kick off, with long striding Bailey Trew running his side deep into attack, but Wavell survived.
Wavell had drawn first blood eight minutes into the Langer clash when Ben Uini managed a barge over try.
Wavell threatened again in the next set of six from the kick off when Karl Oloapu, Po Hotere-Papalii and Tyreece Tait combined, but Marsden SHS scrambled in defence.
But after vigorous too and for, Wavell did cross next – 10 minutes prior to halftime – when the dancing feet of Oloapu created a chance for fullback Jayden Ambichi pouring down the middle of the field in support.
REPLAY: Wavell vs Marsden in Walters Cup
In the curtain raiser, Marsden SHS scored late twice to pip Wavell in a Walters Cup thriller.
With the scores locked at 12-all, fullback Adaquix Luke kicked a penalty goal four minutes from fulltime to ease his side ahead 14-12.
Marsden then scored a try 90 seconds from the end when Emannuel Asomua powered over from close range.
Earlier, Wavell SHS started a gala afternoon of schoolboy rugby league with an accomplished 16-6 win over Marsden SHS in the Broncos Old Boys Year 7 encounter.
Then in the Year 8 Renouf Shield clash, Marsden SHS crossed 90 seconds from fulltime to clinch a 24-18 victory.
The Year 9 Hancock Cup was then claimed by Marsden SHS, 18-14, while the Langer Reserves encounter was also won by the visiting Marsden, 22-4.
