Ipswich SHS v Keebra SHS in the Langer Cup
Ipswich SHS have started off their 2020 Langer Trophy campaign with a thrilling 24-16 victory over Keebra SHS.
Ipswich’s incredible 24-0 massacre in the first-half pushed them too far ahead for Keebra to comeback.
This was thanks to a barrage down the right edge by Kulu Baruani getting his team off to the ideal start.
Ipswich winger Kulu Baruani planted down a gorgeous grubber-kick dabbed in-goal by five-eighth James Frazer to get proceedings underway.
A try assist wasn’t enough for fantastic Frazer when crashing his way through Keebra’s defence and extending his arm over the try line to score one of the best tries from a No. 6 you’ll see.
Ipswich extended their lead at 14-0 when shifting it through the hands to centre Tre Tofu who barged his way over in the left corner. Gabriel Satrick, Jack Laing and Ahmani Leilua all had their fingerprints on this masterpiece.
Ipswich kept piling on the points with Gabriel Satrick sneaking his way in from hooker. It was wing Anton Naiyep who did all the work, catching a highball on his tryline and streaking away 50m upfield.
Ipswich had one final say to top off a sensational first half which saw them go into the break with a 24-point buffer.
Frazer connected once again with his right wing, but this time he sent a crisp cut-out ball to Baruani who scored a leaping Corey-Oats-like try in the corner.
Keebra came out of the break on a mission.
The first to pounce was centre Taniela Mapusua-Lotaki. Minutes later it was Wailer Whaiapu who caught the ball 10m out from Ipswich’s try line. There was no stopping Whaiapu at full speed.
Things got interesting when Keebra halfback Jaxen Yow sliced his way through Ipswich’s defence to score a brilliant solo try with six minutes left on the clock. Yow edged his team closer at 24-16.
It was a strong effort by Keebra to score 16 unanswered points in the second-half, however Ipswich’s red-hot first-thirty sealed-the-deal in their 24-16 round 1 victory.
Ipswich v Keebra Park in the Walters Cup
Keebra SHS has blitzed Ipswich SHS in a 30-10 victory at North Ipswich Park this Wednesday night.
Keebra’s backline plays were silky smooth, with their star-studded back-three gelling together all game to deny Ipswich any attempt at snagging a lead.
Electric Keebra SHS wing Tino Fomai took no time at all to put Ipswich SHS on the back foot, strolling over for the first four-pointer of the afternoon after just three minutes. 6-0.
Keebra centre Bailey Secombe scored his team’s second consecutive try to push them in front 12-0 early. Fomai dashed down the left edge and found Secombe steaming through on his inside.
Towering second-rower Mafiou Cherif barged over for Ipswich’s first try of the afternoon. Hooker Agape Ah-Young found Cherif charging onto it and his sheer strength allowed him to muscle his way over.
Fullback Joshua Donovan extended Keebra’s lead at 18-6 on the stroke of half time. Secombe showcased his deceiving footwork when breaking through the Ipswich defensive line, before offloading a beautiful pop-pass to Donovan who was in support.
Keebra prop Micah Eteru got the second-half underway immediately when barrelling his way over some weak goal line defence from Ipswich. 24-6.
centre Jye Gibson drew Ipswich closer at 24-10 with 15 minutes left, burrowing his way in out wide following sweet through-the-hands play in the backline.
With Ipswich on the comeback, Keebra winger Disharne Tonihi executed a miraculous try against the run of play, settling the scores at 30-10.
Tonihi tore away on a kick chase down the right edge and then dove onto the perfectly weighted shoe which sat up deservingly in Ipswich’s in-goal area.
The Preview
So strong is the Ipswich SHS side it features the recently named Queensland hooker, explosive Gabriel Satrick, off the bench while Meninga Cup winning centre Tru Fotu and Magpies Meninga Cup winning captain Ahmani Leilua were in the side.
Ipswich SHS is again a very strong side, better on paper, we feel, than the teams which has suffered heart breaking semi-final loses in the last two seasons.
Why? Players like Tyler Peckham-Harris, Fotu, Jalen Afamasaga, captain Josiah Pahulu (c), and Leilua are at the top of the game, having blossomed this year in club football.
All this against a powerhouse Keebra Park which features inform prop Eli Tuli, three year Langer trophy veteran Seth Nikotemo, Queensland schoolboys selection Arama Hai and the impressive PJ Poutasi.

How will Keebra Park SHS go without the brilliant, Brisbane Broncos-signed dummy half Blake Mozer who was the mainstay of the team’s ruck attack in 2020 and 2021?
Well new school arrival Gary Herlihy has made a big impression since arriving this year, while another new forward, EJ Finau, is hungry for opportunity in what is an already powerful Keebra Park pack.
What a match it promises to be.
