LANGER TROPHY MATCH REPORT

An early contender for try of the season was a highlight as Mabel Park SHS started its season with a bang against new chums Redcliffe, winning 28-4.

Mabel Park scored four first half tries to lead 16-4, with its fourth try a fantastic effort from 85m out scored by fulback Te Hataterehapaerau Reid after interchange prop Sylus I’liga1 had unloaded a ball in a tackle in his own quarter.

Between I’liga1’s pass and Reid scoring, halfback Julian Drinnan handled twice and centre Elijah Mikaio once as Mabel established a 16-4 advantage.

Reid then scored again in the second half after a magic ball from centre Mikaio, and Mabel Park were safe leading 20-4.

All this after Redcliffe opened the scoring off the back to excellent ball control and two successive penalties.

But then momentum shifted after Mabel Park SHS prop Alex Leapai impacted the match, and Mabel Park SHS rolled down hill for the rest of the half.

Leapai initially made a big run, cutting back inside behind the ruck and picking up Melchizadek Laumatia who was reeled in by Redcliffe SHS fullback Guy Visachi.

However, a second powerful run minutes later by Leapai, and quick play the ball, enabled his hooker Daytona Tupuhi-Taoho to run from dummy half, giving his team front foot ball.

From a left spread, Mabel Park SHS halfback Julian Drinnan scored.

Mabel hooker Tupuhi-Taoho then scored himself minutes later off the back of a dynamic run from centre Elijah Mikaio.

Mikaio was dragged in by Redcliffe winger Regan O’Connell, but momentum was with Mabel Park and the Mabel No.9 displayed great pace to finish off the movement.

Mabel Park left edge forward Marley Lupeomanu then scored tries in the first half and in the second half, the second of which came after a wonderful pass in a tackle by Leapai in the lead up play.

Marley and centre Mikaio were tremendous outside their sharp halves Tevita Holaafolau and Drinnan who had the benefit of front foot ball from their forwards.

Earlier, in the Walters Cup, Mabel Park SHS defeated Caloundra SHS 32-nil.
