25 CNTENDERS FOR LANGER TROPHY PLAYER OF THE YEAR - so far

New faces for PBC SHS

Welcome to the big league for PBC SHS’s edge forward Baylen Donald, and the interchange bench players Will Saunders and Barney Litidamu who as Palm Beach Currumbin SHS usher in a new era.

The trio will debut, getting their chance due to a number of injuries sustained in club matches over the weekend.

PBC SHS have some changes this round.
PBC SHS have some changes this round.

“All three have been playing well in the Langer Reserve and deserve their opportunity,’’ said PBC SHS coach Tim Maccan.

Baylen Donald is the son of Brad Donald, the current Australian Women’s Rugby League Coach.

Will Saunders is the son of former NRL player Don Saunders while Barney Litidamu is another Tweed Seagulls Mal Meninga Cup player.

It will be a wonderful experience for the kids playing in the famous Reds jersey on the Coast against northern neighbours Coombabah SHS.

And now they have to do it all again against a Keebra Park SHS which has scored plenty of tries across the opening two rounds.

Will Semu is back for Marsden SHS

The big fella is back in town.

Promising Marsden SHS centre Will Semu will make a comeback from an extended break against Keebra Park SHS tomorrow.

Semu, a Gold Coast Titans centre or edge forward, has not played for 10 months after sustaining a head knock playing Langer last August.

His old mate, ball playing forward Taelon Te Whiu Hopa, is back in the starting side after being dropped for last week and their inclusion will be a welcomed additions because they give Marsden SHS a better balanced side.

Marsden will hope to build on its round 2 clash against Wavell SHS.

Coming off a 44-nil loss to PBC SHS at home, there must have been some demons mixed in with a desire to bounce back against Wavell SHS.

Down 10-nil and then 16-6, Marsden SHS stayed in the fight.

“House on Fire’’ was then the defensive catch cry as they survived a late surge by Wavell.

It was gutsy, that’s for sure.

And now they have to do it all again against a Keebra Park side which discovered its mojo last Tuesday.

Ipswich SHS - no flash in the pan

Well, well, well. Twenty-four points one week, 46 the next - this is some potent unit the Ipswich SHS community can get behind this season.

Ipswich SHS’s first round 24-16 win over Keebra was no flash in the pan because while Ispwich were favourites to beat Mabel Park SHS, the margin is something no one could have predicted.

And most importantly, Ipswich’s defence restricted their rivals to just one early try - not a bad effort if you had seen the Mabel Park attack in round 1 against Redcliffe.

This is a very good football team on the rise.

And this week the side will include a boy on debut, winger Joven Gyemore, who gets his chance due to rep centre Tre Fotu being unavailable.

Captain Josiah Pahulu is out, but Rene Bagon is back which helps counter Pahulu’s loss.

Redcliffe SHS had fortitude - and tones of it

I knew there was much, much more to Redcliffe SHS’s Langer squad than what I saw over our live stream of their match with Mabel Park SHS.

They basically had the cleaners put through them after an even first 20 minutes, and we feared what PBC SHS might do to them in round 2.

Redcliffe SHS side fought back strongly in round 2.
Redcliffe SHS side fought back strongly in round 2.

Redcliffe SHS travelled down to the M1 to confront the competition favourites who were coming off a 44-nil round 1 rollick over Marsden SHS.

The result - 28-10 to PBC SHS where basically Keano Kini (PBC SHS) was the difference.

Everything we knew about Redcliffe SHS’s DNA - resolve, effort, ball control, kick-chase - was there for all to see.

Emannuel Asomua scored the Walters Cup winner.

And there was some attacking flair as well.

The young Dolphins face another big test against the inform Ipswich, but they should have nothing to fear.

Wavell SHS rue the one that got away

The head of Wavell SHS coach Mick Roberts went down right on halftime when Wavell’s concentration dipped, allowing an unlikely try to Marsden SHS No.7 Coby Black.

Wavell had work so hard to lead 10-nil, and Roberts knew it was a moment which could haunt them - and so it was.

Again this season Wavell SHS has the ability - and they will understand that lapsing on those one percent plays in a competition of this quality can cost them.

In team news the Tuialli boys, cousins Amos and Mark Tuialii, will play left and right centre, with Po Hotere-Papalii moving to fullback.

Last week’s fullback Jayden Ambichi shifts to halfback for the injured Arthur Fitness, with Ethan Jones and Harry Sykes on the bench.

Keebra Park SHS - don’t poke the sleeping bear

Keebra Park SHS did exactly what everyone thought they would do in round 2 against Coombabah SHS - comeback hard after a round 1 loss.

Few could predict the 48-4 scoreline, but everyone knew talent abounded at Keebra Park this season.

So Keebra hitting form, and Marsden SHS regaining its mojo against Wavell, means a cracking encounter will be played between the two schools on the Coast this Wednesday.

In team news, Jared Johnson retains his starting position, but has been moved to the middle to accommodate the return of edge gun Seth Nikotemon.
