SMOKED ribs, rump steak, secret sauces — it’s American barbecue with an Aussie twist and it’s just how owners Chris and Sue Venderley like it.

The couple opened Sue’s Bar and Grill in 2017 and for Chris it was a chance to bring some flavours from home to Bribie Island. Chris moved to Australia 10 years ago, but wife Sue has lived on the island for more than 25 years. She discovered US barbecue flavours while with Chris in the States and, with her training as a chef, was able to instantly work out the ingredients used.

With some help from Chris’s sister, also a chef, and his mum, the couple has developed flavours they’re proud to call their own.

They’re known for their barbecue smoked ribs, rib and rump special, and sauces they make themselves.

“I think that’s what makes a difference on the island, We have variety that no one else has, you’d have to go in to the city to get what we have,” Chris says.

The venue is more than just a restaurant, it’s a meeting place for people, with Sunday sessions and karaoke and has a spectacular view of Pumicestone Passage.

Sue’s Bar and Grill is open Wednesday to Friday for lunch, noon-3pm; and dinner, from 5pm.

2 Sisters Deli Cafe, Bellara

TAMARA Noll has brought quirky and different food styles to her Bribie Island cafe — embracing the best of what she’s learned from the Melbourne cafe and restaurant scene.

The qualified chef bought 2 Sisters Deli Cafe in May, after moving to the island from Melbourne in August 2017. “The food on offer is different to every other cafe because it is homemade and not commercially produced in bulk,” Tamara says.

“Flavour inspirations are from around the world which I have gained with recipes from friends and from my travels. We are known for my homemade tiramisu slice, my sausage rolls, my salads and our coffee, Merlo coffee.”

Tamara decides the day before what she is going to make for the next day, and then buys the ingredients she needs. She enjoys the variety and so do her customers. Such is the demand for her salads, that she posts photos on social media each day to let customers know what she’s whipped up.
