Sunshine Plaza reacts to Maroochydore attack that left man in hospital

Police have asked for witnesses to come forward as an investigation continues into a violent incident at the Sunshine Plaza and the latest condition of the victim is revealed.

Sunshine Coast police have asked for the public’s help following a violent attack at one of the region’s shopping centres last week.

A 40-year-old man was rushed to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital following a disturbance at the Sunshine Plaza in Maroochydore on Sunday, February 5.

A police spokeswoman said the man was walking behind “a group of youths” inside the Horton Parade shopping centre just after 4.30pm when he was punched in the head.

The man fell to the ground, striking his head.

He was transported to Sunshine Coast University Hospital with serious but non-life threatening head injuries.

The victim was later transferred to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

Sunshine Coast Child Protection Investigation Unit acting officer in charge Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Ian Strong said the man was recovering.

“He’s been discharged (from hospital) and recovering and is assisting police with their enquiries,” the police officer said.

A 16-year-old Sunshine Coast boy was arrested last week, but charges are yet to be laid.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Strong said anyone with information or any footage of the incident should come forward.

“Police are continuing their investigation,” he said.

Sunshine Plaza centre manager Michael Manwaring said in a statement on February 6 that he was aware of the incident.

“As this is now a police matter, we are unable to comment further,” he said.

“We’re assisting police with their investigation, and as always the safety of our customers, retailers and staff is our number one priority.”

The security management program at the shopping centre includes CCTV surveillance, a police beat and security patrols.

This incident followed another attack on a man in Primary School Ct in Maroochydore as he walked home from Ocean St on Sunday morning.

The man, in his 50s, was assaulted about 2am and suffered head and facial injuries.

He was taken to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

In another incident in a Short St car park in Nambour on February 2, two people ended up in hospital after strangers stepped in to stop an assault on a 59-year-old man and, on January 28, a 28-year-old man had his car stolen at knifepoint on the intersection of National Park and Nambour Connection roads in Nambour.
