A maroons fan who was on meth has run the gauntlet after police spotted him driving without a licence in a beachside Sunshine Coast suburb.
Patrolling officers saw Kai Albert Lane speeding in his car in Alexandra Headland about 11.30am on February 17 when they decided to intercept him.
Maroochydore Magistrates Court was told on Tuesday the 33-year-old, from the South Burnett town of Memerambi, drove through an intersection into a nearby tourist park.
Police prosecutor Michael Quirk said officers followed and saw Lane drive into the caravan park and jump out of the driver’s side of the car, while a woman in the passenger seat took over. She was then intercepted.
Lane was seen walking away from the vehicle when he was spoken to by police.
Checks revealed he had lost his licence due to being SPER suspended, however in their conversations police believed he was “erratic” and were under the impression he was on drugs.
The 33-year-old was breath tested for alcohol and returned a zero reading so he was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital where blood tests revealed he had amphetamine and ice in his system.
He was charged with driving without a licence and driving under the influence of a drug, which he pleaded guilty to in court this week.
Lane, who adorned himself at court in a Queensland Maroons jumper in the lead up to game two in rugby league’s State of Origin, admitted he “messed up”.
Magistrate Raelene Ellis read out Lane’s traffic record which included previous charges of unlicensed driving and careless driving.
The Memerambi man was fined $750 and disqualified from driving for seven months with a traffic conviction recorded.
