THE Gold Coast is no stranger to hosting some of the world’s biggest celebrities but it’s where they have been spotted that may come as a surprise.
It seems by some of the places celebs have been seen on the Coast, the rich and famous just want to blend into the scenery and be treated like locals.
We’ve put together a list of all the unlikely places Hollywood stars, billionaires and royalty have visited while on the Gold Coast.

Colin Farrell
The Irish actor was spotted outside a Gold Coast spa between filming scenes for his latest film Thirteen Lives.
The movie will follow the events of the 2018 Thai Cave rescue of 12 boys and their soccer coach.
Mr Farrell was seen visiting Endota Spa in Broadbeach last week before heading to set.
Amber Heard and Elon Musk
Actor Amber Heard and billionaire boyfriend Elon Musk visited the Gold Coast in 2017 while Heard was filming Aquaman.
The couple celebrated Heard’s birthday at award-winning restaurant Moo Moo Bar and Grill but the following day were seen enjoying lunch at the modest franchise cafe Shingle Inn at Broadbeach.
George Clooney
Oscar winner George Clooney in 1997 was photographed playing a friendly game of basketball at the Sheraton Mirage at Main Beach.
He was on the Gold Coast to promote his first blockbuster – the infamous flop Batman and Robin.
Mark Ruffalo
Hollywood actor Mark Ruffalo left the staff of Hendrixx Espresso in Palm Beach starstruck when he dropped by in 2016.
Ruffalo was on the Gold Coast for the filming of Marvel’s Phase 3 Thor sequel, Thor: Ragnarok.
Chris Hemsworth
Sushi at Palm Beach owner Angel Ng had no idea she was serving Aussie actor Chris Hemsworth when he popped into the restaurant in 2018.
Ms Ng told the Bulletin at the time it wasn’t until after the Thor actor and his mates left that her staff told her who he was.
She said the trio came in just before closing time but she was happy to serve them and hand over a karaoke microphone.
“They were very nice people, they sang after they asked me for the microphone in my shop,” she said.
“They sang a birthday song to me and I was so happy, they said someone told them it was my birthday that’s why they came here. Unbelievable.
Margot Robbie
Superstar Margot Robbie uploaded a photo of herself in 2016 at Bam Bam Bakehouse at Mermaid Beach.
Owner Ursula Watts at the time confirmed Bam Bam also hosted part of Robbie’s hen’s party and catered an all-day party the following day with sister bakery, Paddock.
Miles Teller and Keleigh Sperry
Actor Miles Teller and wife Keleigh Sperry were spotted dining at Glenelg Public House at Mermaid Beach last year.
Teller was on the Coast for the filming of Netflix sci-fi feature film Escape from Spiderhead.
Teller is known for his roles in Whiplash and the Divergent Series and married model and actor Sperry in 2019.
Tom Hiddleston and Taylor Swift
The British actor was in town while filming comic book blockbuster Thor: Ragnarok in 2016.
The loved-up couple stepped out for a meal at the Gemelli Italian restaurant at Broadbeach and were snapped by a Bulletin photographer holding hands and gazing lovingly at each other.
Owen Wilson and Kate Hudson

US actor Owen Wilson was on the Gold Coast in 2009 to be with fellow star Kate Hudson.
The two met on the set of You, Me and Dupree, and trying to keep their romance on the down low.
However, they were outside the Pacific Fair cinema, where a pre-screening of Hudson’s film, Fool’s Gold, was being held for cast and crew members, when they were spotted by a Bulletin photographer.
News.com.au reported at the time that Wilson was so keen to avoid being snapped that he twice shoved the photographer out of the way as he rushed up the stairs.
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard
Hollywood superstar Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard fronted the Southport Magistrates Court in 2016 charged with illegally importing their Yorkshire terriers Pistol and Boo into the country.
Heard was charged with two counts of illegal importation and one of producing a false document — her incoming passenger card — after allegedly smuggling the dogs into the country on a private jet in 2015 while her ex-husband was filming Pirates Pirates of the Caribbean 5.
Heard and Johnny Depp starred in a video apology over the war on terriers scandal, urging people to respect Australia’s biosecurity laws.
Heard was sentenced to a one month good behaviour bond of $1000 with no conviction recorded.
Orlando Bloom
Hollywood heavyweight Orlando Bloom was snapped at Elk Espresso at Broadbeach in 2015 while in town filming Pirates Pirates of the Caribbean 5.
A Clear Island Waters man who was a regular at Elk spotted Bloom at the trendy eatery and told the Bulletin Bloom was being affectionate with his genetically blessed son, Flynn Christopher Bloom, 4.
“He was very playful with his son, tickling him and smooching the back of his head — it was a cute moment,” the man said.
“He was reading a script at an outdoor table — no doubt for the Pirates of the Caribbean — while his nanny was looking after his son and his two minders were eyeing off anyone who came near him.
“I didn’t speak to him, although the staff at Elk seemed to be enjoying a chat with him and his son once he was leaving.”
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip
It was a wet day in March 1963 when Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip arrived at Coolangatta Airport who were on the Coast for the Kirra royal surf carnival.
The Queen and the Duke passed through a 50-man guard of honour of lifesavers who each wore a different costume.
They represented 44 surf clubs in Queensland and six from northern NSW.
The 1963 royal visit was the second time Elizabeth had visited Australia following her delayed 1953 trip to celebrate her coronation.
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson
The pro-wrestler and actor was on the Gold Coast in 2014 filming his action movie San Andreas when he decided to go for a workout.
Johnson visited Globe Gym at Ashmore where he met fans and spoke to the Bulletin.
“I’m just here hanging out, having a couple of beers, seeing some friends and shooting San Andreas,” he said at the time.
“I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time. It’s a great role and a great project that I’m excited about, and getting back here to Australia is always good.”
The Rock spent 90 minutes working out after the club received a last-minute call to let them know he was on his way.
“It’s a great gym and I knew I could get a great workout and sweat while throwing around some heavy iron,” he said.
Jean-Claude van Damme
The famed martial artist and actor was no stranger to the Gold Coast when he flew in five years ago.
In 1994 Van Damme had spent months on the Coast making his infamous Street Fighter adaptation.
But in 2016 he returned on a humanitarian mission – he wanted to open a wildlife refuge.
So he went to meet with Mayor Tom Tate and held a famously bizarre press conference at the Evandale council chambers.
The movie star praised Cr Tate as being “unusual”
“He’s not really like a mayor,” he said.
“He’s very unusual for a mayor – so relaxed and into sport, science and lots of respect for ecology.
“It is a perfect place and I need his help to find a great locale with a vision for martial arts, which is culture, and hopefully everything will work out because I love Australia – I truly do.
“I am searching for more friends and the Australian people love animals.
“I love the Gold Coast and was here for Street Fighter: The Movie and I don’t know what (Cr Tate) did to the place but he must be a great businessman in a good way.
“The Gold Coast became phenomenal and it is offering more than it did before.”
