Rainworth State School principal Richenda Wagener said the school focused on a whole of school approach to social and emotional learning.

“We are building an expert teaching team with a strong emphasis on classroom delivery and a deep knowledge of the Australian Curriculum,” Ms Wagener said.

“We authentically engage with students and parents so that they are an active part of the learning process in order to build upon a culture that promotes learning for all students.”

Indooroopilly State School principal Keith Warwick said they invested heavily in their teachers, helping them to become the best they could be.

“We work with our teachers to develop a very deep understanding of the Australian Curriculum and how to deliver it with passion and commitment,” Mr Warwick said.

“We have deeply engaged and curious students for whom we have very high expectations. (and) we have a very supportive and involved community.”

Brisbane Girls Grammar School principal Jacinda Euler said its consistently strong NAPLAN results reflected the expertise and supportive care of their teachers and the disciplined approach to learning amongst its students.

“Literacy and numeracy skills are taught rigorously and in a systematic way, but always authentically within the daily learning experiences of every subject,” Ms Euler said.

“I think our success is in no small way due to the fact that we do not narrowly focus on NAPLAN or overemphasise the importance of these tests.

“We are not naive to their significance, but keep our eye very firmly on the rigour and inherent satisfaction that comes from deep, balanced learning – which is its own reward and, essentially, why we are here.”

Brisbane Grammar School deputy headmaster teaching and learning Steve Uscinski said his school’s success was down to a culture of learning and the “overall breadth and balance” of the educational experience it provided.

“Brisbane Grammar School students perform well in all kinds of assessments because they are challenged as learners to develop broad skills in thinking, communication and metacognition essential to leading successful and fulfilling lives and careers,” Mr Uscinski said.

“The best preparation for NAPLAN is the broad, liberal, well-rounded education which defines Brisbane Grammar School’s mission.

“Brisbane Grammar School will continue to use NAPLAN as it is intended: a diagnostic tool to identify the gaps some students might have in essential literacy and numeracy skills and to audit and modify our programs to ensure that foundational knowledge is being successfully taught.”
