THE top performing NAPLAN schools in Brisbane North have been revealed following the 2019 results release.

Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 took part in the controversial nationwide standardised test in May.

The test is designed to measure students in literacy and numeracy and track progress.

The top performing primary and secondary schools in Brisbane North were also Queensland’s top performing schools in those categories.

Results across the Brisbane North region found Year 3 and Year 5 students at St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School received an average NAPLAN score of 5324 — the area’s top performing primary school.

The second best performing primary school was Rainworth State School, where the average result was 5323 for Year 3 and Year 5 students.

The third best performing primary school was Ashgrove State School where the schoolwide average score was 5281.

Brisbane Girls Grammar School was Brisbane North’s top performing high school. There, Year 7 and Year 9 students received an average NAPLAN score of 6252.

The second best performing high school was Brisbane Grammar School, where the average score was 6242, while the third best performing school was All Hallows’ School, where the average score was 6148.

Brisbane Girls Grammar School Principal Jacinda Euler said the school was proud of their students’ “consistently strong” NAPLAN results.

“They take their studies seriously, are encouraged to give their personal best and deserve the excellent results they receive,” Ms Euler said.

All students at the school undertake NAPLAN, which Ms Euler said meant every student played their part in the school’s success.

She said one of the key elements to the school’s consistently-high performance in NAPLAN and other academic results was developing “a love of learning”, and “the ability to think critically”.

“Our girls are taught to think deeply and to think for themselves, and this is reflected not only in their NAPLAN results, but also in how they learn and respond to the world in which they live.

“NAPLAN results capture just one aspect of each student’s academic performance against their national peers, and should be considered alongside other forms of school-based assessment to get a balanced view of their progress,” Ms Euler said.

St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School Principal Ros Curtis said she was very proud of what the students and staff had achieved.

She said she believed one of the keys to the primary school’s success had been an “explicit teaching of the foundational skills of learning — literacy and numeracy”.

“We fundamentally believe that all subjects benefit from strengths in those areas,” she said.

“We’ve done that by increasing teaching time for literacy and numeracy, both in the primary school and in the lower secondary school.”

Ms Curtis said the school doesn’t do extensive preparation specifically for NAPLAN, and said she doesn’t consider it “high-stakes” testing.

“I believe NAPLAN provides really important information to teachers about the strength of their program, and how their students are travelling,” she said.

“There is some test preparation, but the best preparation is what they do every day in the classroom — that’s really important.”

The NAPLAN test remains controversial, with the Queensland Government calling for a national review into the test.

But advocates maintain the test is an important way to view student and school progress at one moment in time and schools use the results to improve teaching.
