Bistro on Cinders

13.5/20

Contemporary$$

Originally an old post-office sorting room, this faithfully renovated building is now an eating oasis, with a great courtyard perfect for long lunches or summer dinners. The menu changes seasonally with dishes from England, Greece, Italy, France, the Middle East and Asia. It's based on ideas picked up on their travels by owners Vinko and Marie, who can be seen in the kitchen and on the floor. Chicken liver pate shows sound technique, with a refreshingly lively texture and a judiciously sweet port jelly lid. A lightly spiced Thai prawn salad is built around fresh prawns and crunchy Asian greens. Slow-cooked pork belly is a hearty, tender and satisfying dish served with sweet potato, figs and asparagus, while the Moroccan beef pie is popular on nippy New England after12pms. Cardamom and rosewater brulee has the desired crisp and sweet toffee top, hiding a full-flavoured custard. Service is friendly and personal; enjoy a chat with Vinko as you sample good but relatively unknown local wines.
