Treasurer Jim Chalmers might have thought he had magical powers when he arrived in Beijing in late September as the Chinese government unveiled stimulus measures on the very day he landed.

Following the Politburo’s announcement that it would take “necessary” measures to meet “new situations and problems” in the economy, Chinese shares soared and iron ore prices spiked.
