The section of the federal gender pay gap report that everyone is most likely to talk about in the office or at the pub on Tuesday has nothing to do with gender.

For the first time, the Workplace Gender Equality Agency has published the size of the average pay packet at almost every company with 100 or more employees – as well as the average pay of the organisation’s top and bottom 25 per cent of earners.

This story was updated on March 5, 2025. An earlier version had incorrectly stated that CEO pay was only included in calculations for the median gender pay gaps. In fact, it was included in calculations for both the average gender pay gaps and the median gender pay gaps.
