The youngest member of the High Court, James Edelman, has emerged as an outlier on the “new” court, with a series of dissents and solo judgments since Stephen Gageler took over as chief justice in November 2023.

The nation’s apex court has also shifted away from the teamwork ethos driven by former chief justice Susan Kiefel, with fewer judges taking part in majority decisions.
