Rio boosts travel, training perks as Pilbara union war heats up

Rio Tinto is offering Pilbara mine workers $7500 a year in on-the-job training and $1400 in family travel expenses as it fights a union push to win a foothold in the region for the first time in 30 years.

The mining giant in the past week raised on-the-job training allowances for all its Pilbara workforce by 50 per cent and increased its holiday travel allowance for remote residence workers and families, which unions say were long-running worker concerns.
