New parents may be denied more flexible working arrangements

A Westpac employee’s landmark win against returning to the office could make employers gun-shy about conditions.

Employers may be reluctant to provide additional flexibility arrangements to help parents ease their way back into the workforce following the birth of a child after a Fair Work Commission decision last week to enable a Westpac employee to work entirely from home.

The judgment could prompt companies to think twice before offering greater flexibility to new parents because of fears such working patterns might become permanent, said lawyer Lauren Cassimatis, founder of criminal law practice Gallant Law and support group Connecting Lawyer Mums.
