A maverick independent unionist backed by former Labor powerbroker Kim Carr has failed to disrupt the Left-Right balance on the party’s powerful national executive.

United Firefighters Union Victorian secretary Peter Marshall – who was kicked out of the Socialist Left for campaigning against Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews – refused to withdraw his nomination at the ALP’s national conference on Friday, forcing the national executive to go to a ballot.
