ACTU fired union delegate over Facebook posts

David Marin-Guzman

The Australian Council of Trade Unions sacked a long-serving employee because his personal Facebook posts clashed with its values, including by allegedly cheering on a rally against vaccine mandates, praising violence against police, disparaging Black Lives Matter and vilifying transgender people.

The Fair Work Commission upheld the ACTU’s immediate dismissal of its call centre worker, despite finding the peak body’s refusal to put the allegations in writing or give the worker a proper opportunity to respond made the firing procedurally unfair.
