Fortescue Future Industries chief Mark Hutchinson says he learnt more selling encyclopaedias door-to-door than he ever did at university.

Hutchinson knocked on doors in towns from Queensland to Tasmania for a year before the internet consigned encyclopaedias to history. It was tough, even compared to his first job in Australia on a station somewhere out near Roma in Queensland cattle country.
