One of the main jobs for an insurance company is responding to storms. Over the past few years, Insurance Australia Group, the largest general insurer in Australia and New Zealand, has mopped up after downpours triggered devastating floods, from Lismore to Auckland.

But Nick Hawkins has also been battling storms in a metaphorical sense. For much of the past four years, as he has led IAG as chief executive, management conditions have been cyclonic.
