Vicki Doyle, the chief executive of Rest Superannuation, an $86 billion industry retirement scheme, worked at insurer Suncorp for more than nine years. Three weeks into her first general manager role, she got a phone call. Her sister had died in a car accident, leaving her three-year-old son orphaned.

She and her husband took in their nephew and amid the heartache and tragedy they found lessons.
