When Wesfarmers chairman Michael Chaney bemoaned the fact that “profit seems to be a dirty word” in October, corporate Australia nodded along.

Rarely has the business community been under so much heat from politicians, the union movement and the broader community. Even the Coalition, the natural friend of big business, got in on the act, suggesting at one point that big-box retailers like Bunnings might be broken up for profit gouging.
