Paul Jeans will stay on as the chancellor of Newcastle University following the resignation of former deputy prime minister Mark Vaile following an extraordinary meeting of the university council on Tuesday.
Mr Jeans, who has been chancellor since 2013, was due to hand over the reins to Mr Vaile on July 1, but a grassroots campaign aimed at Mr Vaile’s links to the coal sector in the Hunter Valley caused him to withdraw on Monday.
