Uni collaboration mines western Sydney’s diamond in the rough

Western Sydney may be in the midst of lockdown but substantial progress has been made on research and training initiatives to take the region forward.

Unbearable pressure produces diamonds. It might be that parts of Australia enduring the harshest of lockdowns are among the nation’s brightest hopes for economic recovery. Case in point, western Sydney.

Sydney’s west has an exceptionally high concentration of small-to-medium enterprises, alongside intensive manufacturing, freight and logistics. It also has significant service-sector capacity, particularly in health and education. These strengths, however, do not align well with lockdown.
