In the days before the formal announcement that Mark Vaile was to be the eighth chancellor of the University of Newcastle, behind-the-scenes grumblings had already begun.

Why Vaile? Didn’t he represent everything the university was trying to distance itself from? Conservative. White. And a man with strong links to the coal sector in a city that has started the torturous process of trying to wean itself off the black stuff.
