Declining rates of student visa approvals and slower processing times for people already living in Australia could lead to a surge in appeals through legal routes and a rise in asylum applications.
Temporary migrants who applied for a student visa to increase the length of their stay in the country increased by 36 per cent in the past year. At the same time, onshore student visa approvals fell by 14 per cent while the backlog of unprocessed visas started to pile up.
