More than one third of all occupations in Australia are in a period of skills shortage that cannot be resolved through migration, as the federal government and the Coalition push out policies designed to crack down on the number of people staying in the country.

That could force a period of innovation among educational institutions and in government policy as much-needed roles in critical areas such as nursing, teaching, and aged and disability care remain almost impossible to fill, experts say.
