Australian detained in Myanmar a long-standing critic of military
Sean Turnell, the Australian academic detained in the coup in Myanmar, has a track record of criticising the country’s military – which he says has held back the country’s economic reform.
“The military will not easily eschew the power they have held on to for decades; the military budget remains completely separate from the national budget, and the civilian arm of government has no say on the military’s spending decisions,” Associate Professor Turnell wrote in late 2019.
