Little known cryptocurrency investor Merkle Tree Capital has emerged as the best performing fund manager of the last financial year, with savvy bets on small-caps also delivering big returns for others.

Merkle, which invests in a range of cryptocurrencies as well as bitcoin, posted a 120 per cent return for the 12 months to June 30, preliminary data from Morningstar shows.
