OpenAI, Perplexity take aim at Chrome to raid $300b search goldmine

In the war of AI browsers, both OpenAI and Perplexity are developing search engines with built-in AI agents to rival Google Chrome.

The traditional way to find out a useful piece of information – say, the market share of internet browsers – has, for the past 15 years, been to Google “internet browser market share” and scroll through the results until one looks good.

In this case, a website called StatCounter says Google’s Chrome holds 68 per cent of the global market, followed by Safari, with 16 per cent. This was the first result.
