Australian software design giant Canva has landed a surprise acquisition of the country’s hottest AI design start-up Leonardo.AI, in a deal worth over $120 million that provides an early test of the competition regulator’s interest in digital platforms entrenching their market power.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said it may review Canva’s purchase as the federal government plots new merger laws that focus partly on stopping big tech firms buying start-ups.
