Google announces quantum computing breakthrough. Should we be excited?
Quantum computers may still be decades away, but Google still thinks it’s worth telling us about the progress it’s making. It both is, and isn’t.
Every so often, scientists working on the generational project of building a quantum computer pop their heads out of the labs and cry out “Yep! We’re still at it!”
Overnight, scientists at Google Quantum AI did just that. They announced to the world they had made some progress on one of the myriad problems standing in the way of creating a useful quantum computer, which could still be decades away, if it ever gets built at all.
