Google and Facebook are empires with tyrannical control over the world's data, the founder of a data-sharing company told The Australian Financial Review Innovation Summit on Tuesday.

The chief executive and co-founder of Data Republic, Danny Gilligan said much of the world's data is concentrated in these companies, meaning that data has been effectively "privatised".
