It is hard not to feel a bit confused when the world gets so excited by something as small as a computer chip, but 11,000 people crammed into a US conference centre on Tuesday morning because there is a consensus that Nvidia is building the future in an age of artificial intelligence.

That’s a big crowd for a chip announcement, and that’s not even including the 316,993 people (and counting) who watched the announcement on YouTube.
