The ABC’s version of Love Island? Don’t adjust your TV set

Leaked memo reveals ambitions for public broadcaster to launch reality TV shows.

When the public broadcaster’s bosses aren’t repeatedly kicking themselves in the groin or fumbling their defences to transparently unwinnable culture wars, it’s easy to forget the ABC actually does a lot of really good stuff that isn’t news.

Bluey, for one. The ABC’s commissioning of Brisbane’s Ludo production house and Joe Brumm to make the children’s show – now by some metrics the most popular kids’ program in the world – is legendary stuff. Pity about the fumble that means the broadcaster doesn’t get a cent from licensing, toys or broadcast rights. Those go to the Poms. Truly, a national disgrace.
