Labor weighs Senate inquiry into foreign purchase of strategic assets

Labor is considering calling a Senate inquiry into the purchase of strategic assets by foreign companies, in the wake of controversy over the purchase of a lease over the Port of Darwin by a Chinese company and amid concerns about the future of the NSW electricity grid.

The revelation comes after former United States deputy secretary of state Richard Armitage said on Tuesday he was "stunned" that Australia blindsided the US on a decision to allow a Chinese company with alleged links to the People's Liberation Army to lease the Port of Darwin.
