It’s not every day that a politician rolls up their sleeves and goes to war with a broken system. Nor is it every day that the Coalition and Greens find rare alignment in opposing reform.
Yet that’s exactly what is unfolding in New South Wales, where Labor Premier Chris Minns and Treasurer Daniel Mookhey are spearheading a campaign to overhaul the failing workers’ compensation scheme. Their bill has already passed through the lower house and is expected to be debated in the upper house on Thursday. The push is driven by concerns that the system could buckle under the burgeoning costs of psychological injury compensation claims, which have doubled in the past six years.
