Labor adds to census backflip on sexual orientation and gender

Labor has added to its backflip on scrapping sexual orientation and gender questions in the census, confirming multiple questions would be included to quell the LGBTQ community’s anger over its exclusion from the count.

After two weeks defending the decision to scrap the questions, Treasurer Jim Chalmers revealed on Sunday the 2026 census would include a new section on sexual orientation and gender, with the questions to be determined by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
