Chalmers’ merger crackdown to shake up M&A

Competition regulator Gina Cass-Gottlieb will get the power to block serial acquisitions and those that entrench the market power of big players, but Treasurer Jim Chalmers rejected a “presumptive ban” on mergers.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairwoman has pushed for a regime that effectively rejected mergers unless the parties could prove the deal was unlikely to substantially lessen competition.
