Anthony Albanese will have to reinvent both himself and Labor. Cole Bennetts
Bill Shorten’s political career grew out of the moderate industrial wing of the Labor Party. After deposing two Labor prime ministers as a factional warlord, he sought to lead the nation with the help of hard-left industrial unions such as the CFMEU. He enveloped and united more of Labor’s tribes by moving to the left on a smash-the-bosses and tax-the-rich rhetoric. By contrast, Anthony Albanese is a creature of the party’s inner city progressive left. His mentor was Whitlam era Labor left-winger Tom Uren. He’s had his photo taken with ageing British revolutionary socialist Jeremy Corbyn. But he also draws inspiration and support from Paul Keating.
