A light tap on the door of uni opportunity
The recommendation from Jason Clare’s review of universities to help disadvantaged students just scratches the surface of broader reform of Australia’s higher education sector.
Jennifer HewettColumnistJason Clare is determined to ensure many more students from disadvantaged backgrounds get university degrees. That naturally includes more Indigenous students as well as those from regional and outer suburban Australia.
This is a logical priority given the stubborn disparity in university attendance between students from different family social and economic income levels. But altering those percentages has been the goal of Australian education ministers for decades without achieving any real success.
