If you were to go the extra mile at work, perhaps bringing in extra revenue or doing extra hours, you’d be pretty annoyed if a slacking colleague gets a raise at your expense.
Yet that’s precisely what the Commonwealth Grants Commission’s methodology for carving up the nation’s goods and services tax revenue has done. And now, with the endorsement of Treasurer Jim Chalmers – himself a Queenslander – it will see Queensland’s share of GST Tax revenue cut, while Victoria, for example, gets a substantial increase.
