Trump’s tariffs show why economics should be compulsory at school

If we want smarter economic policies, we need to invest in economic education first.

As students across Australia head back to school, year 12 Economics students will spend their first few weeks learning about the benefits of free trade and the pitfalls of protectionism. They will study David Ricardo’s theory of comparative advantage and understand why tariffs, subsidies and industry protection often do more harm than good.

Yet, outside the classroom, protectionist policies continue to dominate global politics.
